14 Artists Curators
|
Fourteen students get together to curate an art show as part of their final project for the class Culture and Practice at Clark University. Artist Laura Gill selected Antonio Fonseca's work, Skeletons, mixed media on paper from 2022. Laura Gill wrote:
Antonio Fonseca is an existentialist artist who deconstructs and reconstitutes the topics that he explores in his art: identity as an individual, as a Puerto Rican, as a minority, etc. By defining himself, he reinterprets what it is to be himself and falls into a never-ending cycle of re-assessing and re-inventing himself as a Puerto Rican artist on both his island and the United States. Skeletons deconstructs human anatomy and abstracts the imagery, bringing the viewer uncomfortably close to the subject. The depiction is unflinchingly honest and a reflection of Antonio's philosophy of existentialism: that the universe has no intrinsic meaning or purpose, and people must take responsibility for their own actions and shape their own destinies. With his art, he creates work that tells stories and engages the spectator to reassess what he calls "the spectacle of life." |

One Language is Never Enough: Latino Artists of Southern New England
Exhibiting Artists:
Abelardo Morell, Agustín Patiño, Ana Flores, Anabel Vázquez Rodríguez, Antonio Fonseca, Carlos Hernández Chávez, Carlos Santiago Arroyo, Diane Barceló, Guido Garaycochea, Imna Arroyo, Ingrid de Aguirre Sanchez, Julia Csekö, Lina Maria Giraldo, Lisie S. Orjuela, Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons, Miguel Trelles, Pablo Delano, Raúl González III and Elaine Bay, Robert Gallegos, Sergio Bautista, Silvia López Chávez, Vela Phelan and Victor Pacheco. ONE LANGUAGE IS NEVER ENOUGH: Latino Artists in Southern New England is a group exhibition featuring twenty-four contemporary artists who currently live and work in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. Each of these artists can trace personal roots to specific cultures and countries in Latin America, including: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela. Some are emerging artists at the beginning of their careers, while others are seasoned professionals with rigorous academic training and international exhibition histories. The artists included in this show address themes of identity, hybridity, environmentalism, social responsibility, memory, language, stereotype, and spirituality, and have mined traditions of portraiture, printmaking, photography, sculpture, illustration, magic realism, landscape painting, and abstraction to do so. As a result, this exhibition is not about any one theme, culture, style or language. It’s about plurality and community. It’s about acknowledging that in a global society, being fluent in just one language - English, Spanish, Portuguese, Art, Science, or Love - is never enough. ONE LANGUAGE IS NEVER ENOUGH: Latino Artists in Southern New England, organized by Associate Curator Mary M. Tinti, is presented in collaboration with the Cleghorn Neighborhood Association, the primary service organization for Fitchburg’s Latino and Latino Immigrant communities. This exhibition and its programs are funded in part by the Elsi D. Simonds Lecture Fund. Click here to visit the Fitchburg Art Museum). |
Fonseca Visits the Ink Shop and Olive Branch Press
|
This past July, I visited the great site that is The Ink Shop and Olive Branch Press in Ithaca, New York. Great memories rapidly rushed through my brain as I smelled the ink, felt the soft printing blankets, touched the press, and, of course, glanced passionately at my preferred roller, "BIG MAMMA.". I look forward to some great collaboration in the near future.

20 Artists of Worcester “and Their Work Space”
Cover of the book. © Scott Erb
Worcester County’s latest contribution to the art world hits bookstores in November, Scott Erb of Worcester’s own Erb Photography is releasing his book, Twenty Artists of Worcester during an exhibiting and book signing on November 14, 2008.
The project, which was funded by an individual grant from the Worcester Cultural Commission, highlights 20 of Worcester’s most talented artists. “It was hard to believe after meeting so many creative people in the area that there was so little publicity,” Erb said.Taking matters into his own hands, he began his own creative journey to document—through photography and text—20 of the most sought after artists in Worcester County in their personal studios. “I wanted to meet with and collaborate with them in order to create interesting images that could tell a little bit about them as artsy people living and working in the area.”
Scott will be able, with the help of assistant Donna Dufault and writer Julie Grady, to show off these hidden and not-so-hidden gems in an exhibition that showcases not only his newly published book but the artists and their works featured in the project as well.
After months of hard work, Erb Photography is pleased and proud to announce the opening and book signing will take place November 14th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at The Davis Art Gallery on the third floor of the Printers Building on 44 Portland Street in Worcester. The show will close on January 23, 2009.
For more information or to learn more about the project, Twenty Artists of Worcester, please contact Scott Erb and Donna Dufault at 774.239.0214 or scott@erbphoto.com.
